18 March 2013 Today for the first time, we visited the GWR (The Gloucester and Warwickshire Railway - also known to its friends as "God's Wonderful Railway") which proved (even for non-fanatics like us) to be an extremely interesting morning. We travelled the length of the line and back on the Steam train from Toddington to Cheltenham Racecourse followed by a ride in the renovated Diesel car to the other end of the line where they are hoping to extend it to Stratford-on-Avon.
Stuart rode on the steam loco footplate too!
This was followed by a guided tour around the engine sheds where they are working on a variety of rolling stock and we could also look around the signal box.
The GWR do lots of events: Fish & Chip Murder Mystery nights, Steam & Jazz nights, Days out with Thomas (the Tank Engine) & Friends, Wartime in The Cotswolds, Cream Tea Specials, Steam & Real Ale Weekends, Classic Vehicle days and many more.
Toddington is an easy one hour drive from Hidelow and would make a fantastic family day out, combined with visits to other Cotswold attractions such as Sudeley Castle, Tewkesbury Abbey, Gloucester Cathedral, Stow on the Wold, Cotswolds Rare Breeds Centre and numerous other activities, pubs, villages etc.
